Strange things are afoot. As I reported to my sister-in-law by email yesterday, my husband and I are being made to be older than we really are:

'Yesterday, whilst paying for the shopping, the checkout girl said something that
sounded like 'Oh, Zen yer fae', which had me wondering 'how did she know I was
an artist, and, does this mean I should be painting Buddhist Faeries?'. As it
turns out, what she said was 'Oh, it's Senior Day', which resulted in an 11
dollar discount on our groceries and much gasting of flabber as Grahams and I
realized she'd pegged him for an old codger (I was certain she must have thought
I was just his young nurse or something like). And then, as if Karma thought I
needed a bit of a 'don't get shirty' jab, I went to the eye doctor today for my
yearly exam only to be diagnosed with Presbyopia - which doesn't mean I've got
religion all of a sudden, but instead that my near vision's going a bit
squirrely and I am now in need of a prescription of bi-focals! Karma wanted
even more of a laugh at my expense though - I looked up Presbyopia online and
found a Wikipedia article that explains that the word is derived from the Greek
'presby' meaning 'old person'.'

My sister-in-law, found this highly amusing, as I thought she would. However...she's not far from 40 herself, bless.

I need a lie-down.

this stems from PZ's post about a bloke who didn't eat a communion
wafer, but popped it into his pocket and walked out with it instead.
He's gotten death threats, has been accused of a hate crime (so, it's
acceptable to eat, and later poo out the Eucharist, just don't walk out
of church with it?), and as PZ says, 'it's a frackin' cracker'. I
don't know why the bloke didn't consume it - maybe he's on a diet or
something, but the church's over-reaction is astounding. And now,
because PZ's pointed out how idiotic that over-reaction is, he is being
subject to death threats, and a campaign to have him fired from his
post at the University of Minnesota. The original post can be found

I'm afraid to go out! I'm afraid to surf teh internetz! I pre-ordered
my copy of 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows' from Amazon UK
(because I wanted the original version - not the sometimes-altered US
version), so I won't get it for several days (maybe more than a week).
I just so don't want to be spoiled!! I have my theories, and I'd like
JK Rowling to prove them right or wrong, thankyewverymuch. So far, I've
managed to avoid spoilage by being careful where I surf - I've mostly
been sticking to sites I usually lurk about in and not reading anything
that could contain spoilers.

To pass the time, I've started
re-reading 'Half-blood Prince', but will be finished with it well
before my 'Deathly Hallows' arrives. The temptation is, of course, to
go out and buy a copy locally, but that'd be a bit frivolous with my
galleons, wouldn't it! Must...try...to...resist!!

I've never been into comic books much. I've read the occasional one found lying around the house (probably my brother's), or I may have purchased an interesting one on a whim with my weekly allowance money, but otherwise, I've not been an avid reader, let alone an avid collector. This may come as a surprise to those who know I'm a Neil Gaiman fan. After all, 'The Sandman' has gone from the realms of myth to be nearly synonymous with Neil Gaiman. Usually when you hear someone say 'Neil Gaiman', the words 'The Sandman' are sure to follow, and vice versa. So, I have a vague memory of the frenzy surrounding the release of some comic called 'The Sandman' and it's association with a Neil...somebody or other. I discovered Mr Gaiman through his novel 'Neverwhere', which I thought was a brilliant piece of modern fantasy and later learned was an expanded version of a teleplay he'd written a few years earlier. At the time I purchased the paperback, I still wasn't very familiar with Mr Gaiman...I seem to remember thinking the synopsis on the back looked interesting, and I thought I'd seen the name somewhere and figured it might be nice for light reading. I was instantly hooked. Over the next several years, I began reading more of Mr Gaiman's work, but until today, I'd still not read even a single panel of 'The Sandman'.

Today, Todd (my friendly neighbourhood UPS delivery bloke), delivered a package for me from Amazon. I'd splashed out and got Neil Gaiman's The Absolute Sandman Vol. 1, the first of a four-volume set - this one containing issues 1-20 with bonus materials - initial concepts and proposals and the like. I nearly pulled a back muscle when I lifted the box. Good grief, I thought - have they sent me a brick as well?! Indeed, they had not sent me a brick, but instead, I opened the box to reveal a huge hardbound volume with exquisite cover art inside a sturdy cardboard slipcase. It was as if I'd just been handed an ancient (albeit, very well-preserved) volume of magic - not to be viewed by the novice, but a tome of spellbinding visions fit only for the most devout. My heart skipped a beat. Strange tingling sensations travelled from the cover through my fingers. I opened the cover and became enrapt by the text and images that greeted me. I find I am having a most difficult time drawing myself away from this book. Just coming to the computer to type this has been a challenge. So,

'...if you need me, me and Neil'll be hanging out with the Dream King'*

So, my husband stopped by Home Depot yesterday to pick up supplies for our latest gardening project. At the checkout, the cashier asked him if he was a Veteran, as they were offering a discount to Veterans in honour of Memorial Day. Graham, who is a Veteran of Desert Storm by way of the British Army replied 'Yes, I am; however not of the American Forces'. So, she made him pay full price!

      Hello all!

Sorry to have not kept up with posting regularly like I promised. I've been busy. And lazy. :D

I finished getting the new jewellery page for my site ready and loaded. Here's a teaser:

I'm having a 20% off sale currently - and there are also some 'seconds' at a ridiculously low price. Check 'em out here: http://www.marylayton.net/jewellery.php. I also updated the look of the website - I think it's much more stream-lined and classier looking than my previous design.

In other news - I went to a bread-baking course a few Saturdays ago. My husband got me a book for Yule called The Bread Baker's Apprentice: Mastering the Art of Extraordinary Bread by Peter Reinhart. It just so happens that Mr Reinhart teaches at Johnson & Wales University in Charlotte and was offering a 1-day course based on the book, so we got up at 5 am to get ready and my husband chauffered me to the course while he went off to explore the Raptor Center! A nice day out was had by all!

Today, I've got to get back to some 'day job' duties. The new stationery catalogue has arrived, and Luna Grove Designs needs updating!
