I'm ready to call her finished! The lantern was finished using a light wash of Paynes Grey with Cadmium Yellow for the lightsource colour. I used a black artists pen to punch up the darker wrought iron details. Pencil was used to define the pearls and crystals, additional layers (and some washing out of areas) of Rose Dore and Raw Siena defined the skin tones. Cerulean Blue, Paynes Grey, Ultramarine Blue, and a tiny bit of the Alizarin Crimson were used to create the shadow areas beneath her dress.

Getting down to all the fiddly detail bits now. The dress is mostly finished now - I have added shading to the folds by way of mixing Thalo Green and Indigo Blue. I also used the Thalo Green/Indigo Blue mix to deepen the shading on the green ribbons and bows (on her dress as well as the staff). A mix of Alizarin Crimson and Paynes Grey was used to deepen shading on the red ribbons. Gold-ish ribbons were made using the same mix as was used on the bodice and I added some more Rose Dore and a smigden of Thalo Green and Paynes Grey to create a deeper colour for shading the gold ribbons. Paynes Grey was used on the wrought iron detail of the staff and on the lantern. I have finished her hair except for the holly and pearl tiara, and have shaded her lips and started detailing her eye. The next steps will involve finishing the lantern, bells, and staff details, finalizing the detailing on the dress, sorting out the snowy bit, and I will likely punch up the shading on her skintones as she's meant to be lit by the lantern and needs some brighter highlights and deeper shadows.
Another layer of Rose Dore followed by a layer of Raw Sienna and the skin tones are mostly complete. I've got a few bits of touch-up I'll want to do, but nothing major - just some shadow and shading touch-ups and lip colour and such. I've started defining the dress a bit more, adding some Paynes Grey into the dress colour for a nice burgundy shade, and some red and green detailing on the bodice which has also had a few more layers of the gold-ish mixture. I've worked on the hair a bit more as well, and have started working on the staff and ribbons using a brown mixed from Cadmium Yellow, Rose Dore, and Paynes Grey, and Cadmium Red for the ribbons. The white band area in her hair will be an adornment of holly and pearls. Treading a bit close to the 'Mess' end of the scale, with some of the red of the dress smudged into the snow beneath her. I also see that I missed out masking the very back of her dress as it billows out, which means I'll have to scratch out the red with my craft knife in order to keep the decorative pattern flowing.

My original plan was to have some shadowy mountains in the background - I'm not sure it needs it at this point - but I will likely edit and add them with Painter X when the rest of the painting is finished to see if I should go back and add them on the watercolour original.

I should like to do a bit of a blog feature, and I shall call it "Masterpiece or Mess?"

Here's how it will work. I have completed a sketch that is intended to be a Yule-themed artwork for 2008 (yes, a bit late, I know - blame it on NaNoWriMo). I will be posting my progress as I go, this will serve as a bit of a tutorial sort of thing, as well. Now, this will be either a tutorial on how to create a nice piece of art ("Masterpiece") or how to NOT create a piece of art ("Mess"). Can I finish this artwork without making a mess of it? Will it turn out to be my best ever? Will it be a Masterpiece, or a Mess?

We'll start with the original sketch, and the early progress:

SKETCH

This is my final sketch for the piece. Working from the pencil sketch, I'll paint this with watercolour. No ink linework this time.

1st WASHES

The initial washes of cadmium yellow, and ultraviolet blue mixed with a bit of cerulean blue have been applied. I used a wash brush initially to lay in a clear water wash around the figure. This was done by making a watery mix of cad yellow, and a moderately watery mix of ult blue/cer blue and applying these colours to slightly damp paper. Salt was applied to add texture and variety in the colour and the painting was allowed to dry overnight. Next, I will be building up the background a bit more by adding in more of the blues wash to darken the sky. I will also lift out a bit of the cad yellow (dampening the paper with clear water and using a tissue to absorb the wet colour) if necessary.

sounded like 'Oh, Zen yer fae', which had me wondering 'how did she know I was
an artist, and, does this mean I should be painting Buddhist Faeries?'. As it
turns out, what she said was 'Oh, it's Senior Day', which resulted in an 11
dollar discount on our groceries and much gasting of flabber as Grahams and I
realized she'd pegged him for an old codger (I was certain she must have thought
I was just his young nurse or something like). And then, as if Karma thought I
needed a bit of a 'don't get shirty' jab, I went to the eye doctor today for my
yearly exam only to be diagnosed with Presbyopia - which doesn't mean I've got
religion all of a sudden, but instead that my near vision's going a bit
squirrely and I am now in need of a prescription of bi-focals! Karma wanted
even more of a laugh at my expense though - I looked up Presbyopia online and
found a Wikipedia article that explains that the word is derived from the Greek
'presby' meaning 'old person'.'

My sister-in-law, found this highly amusing, as I thought she would. However...she's not far from 40 herself, bless.

I need a lie-down.

this stems from PZ's post about a bloke who didn't eat a communion
wafer, but popped it into his pocket and walked out with it instead.
He's gotten death threats, has been accused of a hate crime (so, it's
acceptable to eat, and later poo out the Eucharist, just don't walk out
of church with it?), and as PZ says, 'it's a frackin' cracker'. I
don't know why the bloke didn't consume it - maybe he's on a diet or
something, but the church's over-reaction is astounding. And now,
because PZ's pointed out how idiotic that over-reaction is, he is being
subject to death threats, and a campaign to have him fired from his
post at the University of Minnesota. The original post can be found

Here's the latest from the Blue Moon Atelier:

Second Life!:

We are pleased to announce the opening of a virtual gallery in Second Life! The virtual gallery/shoppe is located in the quaint market square of beautiful Brythony Isle (SL location: 115,96,27). Those of
you familiar with Second Life will be pleased to know that you can now
'purchase' virtual framed prints of Mary's artwork for your SL home or business. Also available are faery-themed furnishings, with more to come soon. Within the next few weeks, you will be able to purchase virtual representations of clothing and faery wings based on Mary's paintings for your SL avatar.

While you're in the market, you'll also find official SL gallery/shoppes for Brigid Ashwood, Jasmine Becket-Griffith, Renee Biertempfel, Amy Brown, Selina Fenech, Jessica Galbreth, Deborah Grieves, Jane Starr Weils, Louise Scott, Mystical Masks, and more added almost daily. Brythony Isle is also the official SL home of Faery Magazine.

If you are unfamiliar with Second Life, we invite you to visit the SL website at http://www.secondlife.com to learn more. You can create an account and download the software for free.

I'm afraid to go out! I'm afraid to surf teh internetz! I pre-ordered
my copy of 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows' from Amazon UK
(because I wanted the original version - not the sometimes-altered US
version), so I won't get it for several days (maybe more than a week).
I just so don't want to be spoiled!! I have my theories, and I'd like
JK Rowling to prove them right or wrong, thankyewverymuch. So far, I've
managed to avoid spoilage by being careful where I surf - I've mostly
been sticking to sites I usually lurk about in and not reading anything
that could contain spoilers.

To pass the time, I've started
re-reading 'Half-blood Prince', but will be finished with it well
before my 'Deathly Hallows' arrives. The temptation is, of course, to
go out and buy a copy locally, but that'd be a bit frivolous with my
galleons, wouldn't it! Must...try...to...resist!!
